Literacy

Language and Literacy stands as a cornerstone within the Northern Ireland Curriculum, comprising one of its six Areas of Learning. It embodies a comprehensive approach that acknowledges the interconnectedness of Speaking and Listening, as well as Reading and Writing. These proficiencies serve as foundational elements that transcend into all other areas of the curriculum.

The statutory curriculum for Language and Literacy is delineated as follows:

In the Foundation Stage, students cultivate proficiency in: Attention and Listening Skills; Phonological Awareness; Social Language Usage; Language and Cognitive Development; Expanding Vocabulary; Reading; and Writing.

Throughout Key Stages One and Two, students further their understanding and capabilities in: Speaking and Listening; Reading; and Writing.
